10 Handy Snow Removal Tips

10/4/2018

At E.P.M., we know a thing or two about snow removal. Today, we wanted to share a few tips that we have learned over the years to help get you ready for this winter. So, without further ado, here we go.

  1. Like all seasons in Michigan, the weather in winter can be very unpredictable. While meteorologists do their best to give us a heads up on what to expect for snowfall, ice, and wind, it’s best to also be prepared for the worst. Keep extra food, water, gas, snow shovels, de-icing materials and, if you can swing it, a generator. This simple list is worth 10 times its weight in peace of mind.
  2. Set up reflectors along the sides of your driveway to mark where your drive ends and your lawn and landscaping begin. In addition, plan on where you want your snow piled and/or where it will cause issues. These two steps will be a tremendous help for you and the person who does your plowing.
  3. Take it easy and just chill out at home until the storm passes. Your AWD or 4WD vehicle likely can’t safely handle storm-condition roads as well as you probably think it can. So, just ride it out until the roads are cleared. In the meantime, treat it like a snow day and make some hot chocolate and grab a book or a board game.
  4. If you must venture out into a storm, be sure to dress warm and be extra cautious.
  5. Keep pace with the snowfall. It is best to remove snow at every 4-6 inches, rather than letting it pile up and trying to deal with when the storm is done. Not only is this easier on your body, it helps to ensure that you can get out (or someone else can get in) in case of an emergency.
  6. Shoveling snow is a serious workout. In fact, they should have a snow shoveling machine at the gym. That said, pace yourself when shoveling. People have heart attacks from shoveling every year. Many more wind up with pulled muscles and soreness. In fact, investing in a snow blower is a pretty good idea. Considering a snow plowing service to tackle that snow is another good idea. Your back will thank you for it.
  7. Salt is a traditional standby for melting snow, but there are safer de-icing options out there. Salt can wreak havoc on your landscaping, sidewalk, and driveway. Yes, other snow melting products cost a little more, but this investment could save you a lot of money in fixing your lawn, driveway, etc.
  8. Whether you use salt or another de-icing material, always apply it cautiously. Keep it away from the your lawn and landscaping, as well as the edges of sidewalks and driveways.
  9. If you have pets, seek a salt alternative. The salt hurts their paws. Just be sure that, when looking for a salt alternative, you verify that it is pet safe.
  10. Don’t create paths across your lawn. Sure, it might be the shortest route to get in and out of the house, but the foot traffic and salt can really do a number on your lawn. In fact, you could wind up with a path there all year round. And you don’t want that.

Hopefully these tips will spare you some anxiety and soreness this winter. And, remember, for all of your commercial snow removal needs, contact E.P.M. or call us at (517) 990-0110 today!

I like your tip to stay at home during snowstorms. With winter coming up, I want to make sure that I'm having the snow removed from my sidewalks and my roof. I'll make sure to stay home during heavy storms to make sure that my family and I stay safe.

That's a really cool tip to set up reflectors at your driveway to delineate different parts of your yard. It's been snowing pretty hard where I live. I'll have to look into professional snow plowing because I'm usually pretty busy.

I like what you said about removing snow every 4-6 inches. My brother has been telling me about how it's been snowing at his house. I'll share this information with him so that he can get it removed properly.
